When Kid Rock demanded a $25 weekly child support payment from his sonβs mother, it was never about the money. It was about accountability. In 2007, the rock star turned father insisted that Kelley South Russell pay that modest sum every week as a condition for expanded visitation rights. βHe wanted her to maintain consistent responsibility for their son,β said her attorney Kathy Vogt at the time.
The story of Bobby Jr. began long before the platinum records and tabloid headlines. Robert James Ritchie Jr. was born on June 14, 1993, to a then-unsigned club musician and his eighth-grade sweetheart. For the first six months of his life, the boy lived with his mother, but everything changed when Kelley left him on his fatherβs doorstep. βShe dropped him off and never looked back,β a close source recalled. Ritchie, still scraping by in the Detroit suburbs, took over full-time parenting with help from his mother Susan, his sister Carol, and the babyβs godmother.
Once his 1998 album Devil Without a Cause sold over 11 million copies, Ritchie moved his son into a large home in Clarkston, Michigan. He chose the quiet Oakland County community for its public schools. Inside that house, he enforced a zero-tolerance drug rule and required his son to address adults as βsirβ and βmaβam.β He structured his touring calendar around the school year, never staying on the road more than two weeks at a stretch. He flew back between arena dates to drive Bobby Jr. to school, attend parent-teacher conferences, and coach his youth baseball and basketball teams.
The routine faced two shocks in 2006. In July, Ritchie married actress Pamela Anderson. Four months later, he filed for divorce, later stating the split followed an argument in which Anderson criticized his mother and sister in front of 13-year-old Bobby Jr. That same autumn, Kelley Russell returned to Macomb County Circuit Court seeking more parenting time. After ten months of negotiation, Ritchieβs team agreed to alternating weekends and shared holidays while keeping primary custody with Ritchie. The price: $25 a week in child support, dropping to $12.50 whenever Kelley kept Bobby Jr. for six consecutive days or more.
Bobby Jr. finished high school in Clarkston away from the tabloid glare. He played varsity sports and met his future wife, Marisa Trovato. After graduating in 2011, he studied music business at Belmont University in Nashville. In 2014, while still in college, he and Trovato welcomed a daughter, Skye, making Kid Rock a grandfather at 43. Rather than living off his fatherβs royalties, Bobby Jr. took jobs in social media management and brand marketing, founded his own apparel company, and married Trovato in December 2021 after the birth of their second child, Ryder.
βThe six-month-old boy once left on a Michigan doorstep is now raising two children of his own with the high school girlfriend he met in the Clarkston school district his father stayed home to keep him in.β
