A country icon known for swagger suddenly whispered about lost love, and Toby Keith‘s June 1997 single We Were in Love revealed a vulnerable heart beneath the anthems.
The song launched Dream Walkin’ as its first single, earned critical praise, and became a country staple while showing Keith’s ability to connect through tenderness instead of bravado.
Chuck Cannon and Allen Shamblin wrote a bittersweet portrait of young romance, Friday nights, first cars, summer skies, and a love that still glows through memory.
We Were in Love turns nostalgia into ache and proves that a country ballad can feel both intimate and timeless.
Keith’s delivery carries the human element, letting the pain of separation and the warmth of remembered passion move through every line.
