When you stand next to a giant you stand taller.
George Strait spoke those words at the CMT Giants tribute to Charley Pride. He had just performed “Is Anybody Goin’ to San Antone” a signature song for Pride. Strait was not just a legend paying respects. He was a young singer again standing next to his hero.
Charley Pride passed away on December 12, 2020 at age 86. On August 25, 2021 Strait remembered the man who shaped his early years in Nashville. Pride was already a superstar when Strait arrived. Their bond lasted more than four decades built on trust and respect.
Strait never forgot the feeling of standing beside a giant. Even after his own massive success he still felt like the newcomer. His tribute was about more than Pride’s records. It was about presence confidence and a lasting influence.
Charley Pride broke barriers in country music. His voice and work ethic inspired Strait and many others. Strait’s performance was a heartfelt thank you for the inspiration that never faded.
In that moment Strait proved that true giants never forget who helped them stand tall. The admiration was real and it made the tribute unforgettable.
